Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) containing persistent potentially hazardous substances have garnered attention for their ubiquitous presence in natural environments. This study investigated the impact of polyethylene glycol (PEG), a common PPCP component, on Mytilus galloprovincialis. Mussels were subjected to two PEG concentrations (E1: 0.1 mg/L E2: 10 mg/L) over 14 days. Oxidative stress markers both gills digestive glands evaluated; cytotoxicity assays performed haemolymph gland cells. Additionally, cell volume regulation (RVD assay) was assess physiological PEG-induced alterations. In gills, reduced superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity increased lipid peroxidation (LPO) at E1. gland, only LPO influenced, while SOD oxidatively modified proteins (OMPs) unaltered. A significant decrease viability observed, particularly E2. RVD assay revealed disruptions cells These findings underscore effects exposure M. They are open further investigations clarify environmental implications PPCPs possibility exploring safer alternatives.

Water-soluble polymers (WSPs) are widely used in household products, including cleaning and personal care products. However, unlike insoluble plastic polymers, the environmental risks of WSPs poorly understood. This study was performed to identify use characterize their emissions environment key data gaps for prioritization. An inventory developed these were broadly grouped based on structure. Information from patents combined with literature estimate down-the-drain each polymer. For highest emissions, predicted concentrations surface water soil estimated. A total 339 individual identified categorized into 26 groups. The sodium laureth sulfate (1.6-3.4 g capita-1 day-1), styrene/acrylates copolymer (0.1-0.8 monoethanolamine-laureth (0.4-0.8 day-1). analysis available fate ecotoxicity 30 high-emission indicated that several lacking data. In particular, no found polyethylene glycol/vinyl acetate, polyquaterniums polyol ethoxylate esters has been understudied, particularly light hazard potential. a lack reporting polymer properties hinders analysis. We recommend increased transparency identities moving forward as well experimental work determining fate, removal, prioritized
