Antibiotic resistance is a global environmental and health threat. Approximately 4.95 million deaths were associated with antibiotic in 2019, including 1.27 that directly attributable to bacterial antimicrobial resistance. Hospital wastewater one of the key sources for spread clinically relevant genes (ARGs) into environment. Understanding current situation ARGs hospital great significance. Here, we review prevalence antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) from other places treatment methods used. We further discuss intersection between COVID-19 during pandemic. This highlights issues dissemination critical It imperative implement more effective processes eliminate ARGs, particularly long period.

The hybrid bentonite/ZnO composites based on the metal-organic framework (MOF) ZIF-8 were synthesized by a microwave method using 2-methylimidazole and zinc nitrate, incorporating natural bentonite (5, 15, 25 wt%) followed thermal treatment at 550 °C. as-prepared materials characterized for their crystal structure, morphology, composition, surface chemical states, textural optical properties. photocatalytic activity of ZnO/bentonite was evaluated in degradation mixture solution endocrine disruptors (EDCs) (bisphenol A, propylparaben, 17α-ethinylestradiol, 5 mg L-1 each) pH = 7 under simulated solar light. material characterization showed that into ZnO increased specific area, facilitated formation oxygen vacancies, decreased recombination rate e-/h+ pairs compared to ZnO. revealed 15 wt%/ZIF-8 derived composite enhanced ZnO, allowing total 61.26% mineralization EDC 240 min. Furthermore, effluent decrease estrogenic end process, with no by-products formed present activity. bentonite/ZIF-8 is proposed as an alternative ZnO-based catalyst effectively removes compounds from aqueous media.

The reuse of reclaimed water is essential for sustainable management in arid regions. However, despite advancements Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs), certain micropollutants may persist. To address these challenges, the recently enacted European Urban Directive (UWWTD) has established strict standards focused on monitoring twelve specific indicator compounds. In line with this, present study aims to evaluate concentrations and potential risks UWWTD-designated compounds across various sources, including surface water, groundwater, effluents from a WWTP southeast Spain. Although none evaluated sources are, as expected, intended human consumption, were assessed based worst-case scenarios that could amplify their impact. health different age groups ecosystems, focusing key organisms such fish, daphnia, algae, using empirical assessment approaches. risk identified low most regarding health, except citalopram (HRQ = 19.116) irbesartan 1.104), which showed high quotients (HQR > 1) babies, particularly water. terms ecotoxicological risk, presented highest ecological quotient (ERQ 3.500) followed by clarithromycin, algae 1.500) being vulnerable organism. Furthermore, like citalopram, venlafaxine, benzotriazole exhibited moderate between 0.1 was reduced groundwater. Finally, this discussed impacts elevated emerging compounds, emphasizing need rigorous wastewater protect ecosystem integrity. It also revealed notable differences outcomes when comparing two distinct evaluation approaches, further highlighting complexities accurately assessing risks.

Municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are crucial for maintaining good quality of surface water, limiting environmental pollution. However, during wet-weather events, WWTPs become an important point-source discharge due to the activation bypass, which releases a mix untreated and stormwater. This work aims assess how WWTP discharges (effluent bypass) impact on receiving water body dry- wet-weather, monitoring 78 pollutants (7 conventional pollutants, 19 heavy metals, 52 micropollutants) in each stream dry-weather, effluent bypass wet-weather), including influent dry-weather comparison. The occurrence, concentration levels variability, risk were addressed, with specific focus high-resolution (up 20-min) sampling based expected relevant temporal dynamicity. A wider range occurred included undetected compounds influent. Besides, greater inter-events variability concentrations was observed, but smaller intra-event only some exhibiting distinct first-flush effect. To address challenge cost-effective monitoring, we explored applicability readily measurable parameters (total suspended solids electrical conductivity) as proxies micropollutants. Correlations between these pollutant groups suggest promising path further investigation broader application. magnitude rain event also affected levels, volume clearly affecting dilution. assessment revealed significantly higher associated compared effluent, especially terbutryn, highlighting urgency improved management strategies. Overall, this study highlights contribution from WWTPs, emphasizing importance high-frequency capture peak accurately risk.
