Microplastic (MP) occurrence is a growing concern in environmental research, with significant attention focused on its presence various ecosystems worldwide. While much research has centered large lakes and water bodies, remote alpine remain relatively unexplored terms of microplastic occurrence. Studying important to understand the global spread pollution, assess impact pristine ecosystems, inform conservation efforts these vulnerable environments. This study investigates sediment Lake Cadagno, lake situated Piora Valley southern central Switzerland. The no effluents, meromictic nature means that bottom not mixed above, which can potentially lead an enhanced accumulation microplastics sediments perpetuate system. Through core sampling analysis, we aim identify sources deposition trends this environment. Our findings reveal within Cadagno: total, 186 MP particles were extracted from 756 cm3 processed (0.24 MP/cm3) average 19.5 MP/sample (SD ± 11.8 MP/sample). results suggest are predominantly attributable localized associated nearby human activities. absence synthetic fibers limited polymer types detected minimal contribution atmospheric deposition, reinforcing significance local anthropogenic influences. Spatial clustering near potential underscores surrounding land use activities distribution. Overall, highlights importance addressing contamination even unmodified like elucidate need for strict adherence waste management correct disposal actions reduce impacts contamination.
