Non-degradable plastic bags are a major contributor to marine and soil pollution. They represent significant percentage of the generated solid waste can last for hundreds years in environment. The aim present study was find alternatives conventional non-degradable by obtaining biodegradable compostable starting from simple materials like starch, poly(lactic acid) (PLA), glycerol. Increasing strength hardness polymer achieved adding mineral (talcum). preliminary studies indicated that two compositions suitable advanced testing produce initial granular material. These were tested determination melt flow index (MFI), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), polymers response heating (thermogravimetric analysis, TGA differential scanning calorimetry, DSC). biodegradability evaluated burial types soil. obtained results compared with same set experiments performed on polyethylene bags. After three months soil, only synthesized this show signs accentuated degradation while still intact. surface morphology explored electron microscopy (SEM). thermoplastic material meets requirements European standard EN13432/2002 regarding packaging.

Abstract Plastic pollution is of critical environmental concern, thus biodegradable plastics (BPs) have emerged as a potential solution to limit plastic waste accumulation. However, the fate BPs in environment, particularly their degradation and subsequent generation microplastic (BMP) particles, remains poorly understood. This review aims provide comprehensive insights into biodegradation process impacts on soil freshwater environments. Microorganisms play pivotal role this by dismantling polymer chains smaller particles. Factors influencing rates include composition, conditions (e.g., temperature, ultraviolet radiation (UV), pH), presence chemical additives. incomplete can result BMPs, potentially perpetuating environment posing risks ecosystems organisms. consolidates understanding mechanisms governing BMP formation, which imperative for evaluating consequences devising effective strategies managing waste.
