Abstract The local climate zones (LCZs) classification system has emerged as a more refined method for assessing the urban heat island (UHI) effect. However, few researchers have conducted systematic critical reviews and summaries of research on LCZs, particularly regarding significant advancements this field in recent years. This paper aims to bridge gap scientific by systematically reviewing evolution, current status, future trends LCZs framework research. Additionally, it critically assesses impact climate-responsive planning design. findings study highlight several key points. First, challenge large-scale, efficient, accurate mapping persists issue Despite challenge, universality, simplicity, objectivity make promising tool wide range applications future, especially realm In conclusion, makes substantial contribution advancement advocates broader adoption foster sustainable development. Furthermore, offers valuable insights practitioners engaged field.

In this work, we investigate how the seasonal hysteresis of Surface Urban Heat Island Intensity (SUHII) differs across climates and provide a detailed typology daytime nighttime SUHII loops. Instead typical tropical/dry/temperate/continental grouping, describe Earth’s climate using Köppen–Geiger system that empirically maps biome distribution into 30 classes. Our thesis is aggregating multi-city data without considering each city results in temporal means fail to reflect actual characteristics. This because function both urban rural features phenology surroundings can differ considerably between cities, even same zone. investigation covers all densely populated areas Earth uses 18 years (2000–2018) land surface temperature cover from European Space Agency’s Climate Change Initiative. findings show that, addition concave-up -down shapes, also exhibits twisted, flat, triangle-like patterns. They suggest wet climates, almost universally concave-up, but they paint more complex picture for cities dry climates.
