Abstract The impact of digital transformation on employment has been increasingly noticed by the academic community, while internal mechanism still remains as a black box, especially in terms specific pilot policy, such national smart city pilots policy China. Based city-level and firm-level panel data, we investigate China’s pressure urban job seekers using difference-in-differences model. results show that significantly reduces cities. In addition, bringing configuration optimization technological upgrading, affect firm selection at micro level, generating siphoning effects, factor substitution efficiency gains, further macro economy promoting economic agglomeration, industrial structure transformation, regional innovation thereby affecting pressure. Furthermore, reduction effect are heterogeneous cities, firms, workers’ education levels. Finally, conclusions implementations provided to highlight theoretical practical values.
