Published: Jan. 1, 2024

Addressing the urgent need to resolve energy trilemma—balancing security, equity, and environmental sustainability—is pivotal for global economy's transition towards green development. This study investigates role of financial policy (GFP) in enhancing efficiency across Chinese cities from 2006 2021, utilizing a spatial double-difference (SDID) model. Results indicate significant enhancement within 500-kilometre radius due GFP, attributed optimizations industrial structure, reductions consumption, advancements innovation, strengthened regulations. The further explores GFP's capacity address trilemma by improving through mechanism testing heterogeneity analysis. It highlights necessity city-specific applications, providing nuanced insights policymakers, entities, corporations committed sustainable paper acknowledges certain limitations calls in-depth future research on comprehensive impact, thereby advancing discourse finance's potential mitigate challenges.

Abstract As a crucial mechanism for advancing sustainable development, green finance invigorates national initiatives to reach peak carbon emissions and achieve neutrality. This study leverages panel data from 215 Chinese cities spanning 2013–2022, using the pilot zone policy (GFZ) as quasi‐natural experiment. By employing difference‐in‐differences methodologies, this research examines effects of GFZ on energy emission efficiency (ECE) in China, along with its spatial spillover impacts. The findings reveal substantial enhancement ECE attributable GFZ, results remaining robust through various stability checks. Mechanism analysis further indicates that boosts by promoting innovation facilitating industrial upgrading transformation. Additionally, heterogeneity suggests is more effective higher marketization levels. Improvements among different types resource‐based are observed order declining, regenerative, growing, mature cities. Spatial reveals at distance 500 km zones. not only provides empirical evidence supporting expansion but also offers unique perspective development.
