Seabed mapping is currently the baseline information for ocean management and conservation, an indispensable item within research Marine Spatial Planning. Here, we use a case study published data along southeast Brazilian continental shelf to illustrate concepts ideas of potential benthic habitat importance having maps on different scales using multi-design approach. The analysis presented here uses regional map distinct criteria (seabed geodiversity biodiversity, influence tailings plume) define three areas be mapped in high-resolution, as part marine monitoring program. background tailing dam failure disaster that led input iron ore ocean, leading major environmental disaster. Three were chosen, including: Protected Area (MPA Costa das Algas), fishing ground (the Doce River prodelta/depocenter), understudied reef area (Forgotten Reefs). Potential was carried out acoustic surveys (multibeam echosounder acquiring bathymetry backscatter) ground-truthing (sediment samples seafloor image). Results detailed habitats throughout areas, providing primary their distribution. approach indicated although can indicate vulnerability first assessment approach, high-resolution (herein, 20 m or finer) beneficial evaluate produce higher-confidence level decision-makers. Having overall view what where collect new finer would best identify vulnerable that, this study, could threatened by plume dispersion accumulation. Our results support delineation priority aiming monitoring, protection guiding other studies, besides consolidation integration various datasets through hierarchical classification scheme. Although Brazil has never produced national entire margin, there are already conditions plan, execute maintain program, partnering with Universities, Government Institutions (e.g., Navy), private sector.
