There is an increased global demand for activated carbon (AC) in application of water treatment and purification. Water pollutants that have exhibited a greater removal efficiency by AC included but not limited to heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, natural organic matter, disinfection by-products, microplastics. Granular (GAC) mostly used aqueous solutions adsorption columns treatment. Commercial only costly, also obtained from non-renewable sources. This has prompted the search alternative renewable materials production. Biomass wastes present great potential such because their availability carbonaceous nature. turn can reduce on adverse environmental effects caused poor disposal these wastes. The challenges associated with biomass waste based GAC are low strength attrition resistance which make them easily disintegrate under phase. paper provides comprehensive review recent advances production highlights future research directions. Production parameters as granulation conditions, use binders, carbonization, activation methods, effect textural properties discussed. Factors influencing capacities derived GACs, models, mechanisms, regeneration potentials reviewed. literature reveals produce possibilities being regenerated. Nonetheless, there need explore 1) preparation pathways adsorptive GAC, 2) sustainable life cycle assessment techno-economic analysis, 3) mechanisms contaminants emerging concerns microplastics unregulated by-products.
