Microalgae have attracted wide attention due to their extensive application potential. Dewatering is a necessary work for the of microalgae, especially in biofuel production, where forward osmosis (FO) research relatively advanced but still faces technical bottlenecks hindering large-scale commercialization. Based on current recent years, progress causes and control membrane fouling, development materials optimization structure, energy saving efficiency process are reviewed this paper. We found that different species algae direct effects fouling. Chlorella vulgaris has low fouling trend, mechanisms need further investigation. The material structure membranes main methods reduce there some defects, such as complicated preparation water flux, which difficult apply large scale. reducing costs by using seawater, urine, fertilizer, etc. new draw solutions (DS) reviewed. At present, many aspects FO microalgae dewatering technology not well understood, future should focus scaling up existing technologies.
