Abstract In this article, we track the evolution of fluvial biogeomorphology from middle 20th century to present. We consider emergence as an interdisciplinary research area that integrates knowledge drawn primarily geomorphology and plant ecology, but with inputs hydrology landscape ecology. start by assembling evidence for field a keyword search Web Science detailed analysis papers published in two scientific journals: journal—Earth Surface Processes Landforms; multidisciplinary river science journal—River Research Applications. Based on evidence, identify three distinct time periods development biogeomorphology: ‘early years’ before 1990; transitional decade 1990s; period rapid expansion diversification themes, methods investigation scales since 2000. Because literature is vast, can only summarize developments each these periods, refer recent in‐depth reviews conceptual perspectives relevant topics. Thus, rather than full deep review, present annotated bibliographic overview biogeomorphology, whereby text describes broad trends supported tables citations deliver greater detail. end brief consideration likely future developments.

Abstract Rivers are subject to increasing human pressure, resulting in a loss of their natural characteristics, further enhanced by climate change. The present study focuses on piedmont reach the Italian Po River and combines Landsat satellite information with hydrological records investigate changes sandbars exposure riparian vegetation coverage, considering summer period 1984–2022. Satellite data were handled via Google Earth Engine, looking at common indexes such as Modified Normalized Difference Water Index, which was used identify temporal variations wetted channel area, Vegetation considered proxy coverage variations. Changes river hydrology analysed annual minimum water levels, discharge duration curve, stage–discharge relationship yearly volume. Results suggest that process oversimplification is affecting this River, showing how change can affect European watercourses. Indeed, after an initial where bars tended be barer somehow stable over time, most recent decade different trend appeared, able colonize exposed more. Using exemplary case study, work suggests prolonged dry periods, more decades, might impact large medium rivers located temperate climates, favouring development sandbars, eventually less dynamic active channel.

Abstract Research in fluvial biogeomorphology largely aims to promote our understanding of the interactions between riparian vegetation and morphodynamics within riverine ecosystems. Starting at end last century, Angela M. Gurnell has made a major contribution geomorphology by considering water flow sediment transport combinaton with later also aquatic thus significantly promoting biogeomorphological approach from its early days until today. The objective present paper is set studies results obtained over 20 years mainly authors many collaborators, including Gurnell, on panel French rivers: Tech, Garonne, Isère Allier. In particular, feedback mechanisms dynamics were investigated directly field using high‐resolution remote sensor systems scale individual plants, populations, communities landscapes as well during semi‐controlled ex‐situ experiments plants. Collectively, authors' research conducted past helped elucidate some key aspects lowest highest levels ecosystem organization.
