Abstract Active restoration is predominant to reverse grassland degradation and soil organic carbon (SOC) loss. However, early studies focused on the bulk (C) dynamics upon restoration, with limited evidence involving SOC fractions. Here, we explored how particulate mineral‐associated OC (POC MAOC), metal‐bound OC, aggregate‐associated molecular structure microbial‐derived respond Tibetan Plateau, also studied effects of active fractions across ecosystems through a global‐scale meta‐analysis. We found that POC contents substantially decreased, while MAOC content remained stable after degradation. In contrast, short‐term induced significant decrease in due lower pH, but stable, indicating resulted stability. Moreover, aggregate its stability recovered rapidly during did not recover or even declined, suggesting asynchrony between them. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed no changes composition intact, degraded restored grasslands, alone does mirror Furthermore, meta‐analysis response SOC, occurred sequentially three phases characterized by vulnerability, retention re‐loss respectively. Synthesis applications . Combining field experiment global synthesis, induces divergent shifts fractions, threshold chronosequence. Relying solely overall may misrepresent true impact retention. Therefore, it essential pay more attention functionally distinct which could help us accurately assess predict C–climate feedback.
