Abstract The circular economy (CE) has emerged as a focal point in discussions surrounding sustainable development, industrial production, and resource efficiency. While it garnered attention ground‐breaking paradigm with the potential to harmonize economic, societal, environmental dynamics, divergent perspectives critical inquiries have surfaced. This paper delves into interdisciplinary literature on CE, exploring interpretative flexibility inherent its conceptualization. Acknowledging diverse range of strategies associated study contends risks misappropriation, emphasizing importance understanding systemic socio‐ecological implications. With an umbrella review approach, rarely applied social sciences, navigates through 167 articles, unveiling thematic trends identifying gaps within existing literature. By scrutinizing techno‐managerial dominance CE discussions, calls overshadowing numerous issues. It highlights systematic CE's aspects, essential provide insights how policies, strategies, actions affect society, well emerging discussion alternative transformative paradigm. concludes three‐stage design: meticulous analysis revealing trends, reflective exploration research avenues. serves comprehensive guide for scholars practitioners holistic encouraging contributions address identified fostering evolution

Before 2020, the European Commission adopted several strategies pursuing sustainable development in Union (EU). At core of these strategies, we can find circular economy (CE) which relies on 3 R concept: reduce-reuse-recycle. Starting from unique regulatory context, aim present review is to determine degree works published by researchers affiliated with institutions within EU address challenges identified at level and respond field economy. A bibliometric analysis based Scopus was performed using VOSviewer bibliometrix package R. The sample made up 13,553 articles between 2006 2023. results show that there has been an increase number citations during last years, line adoption relevant regulations. co-word generated five domain clusters: life cycle assessment; biomass production waste valorization; materials recycling; wastewater treatment environmental pollution; carbon emissions reduction energy recovery. Several topics are common all countries, they strongly related EU-wide regarding study implications for standard-setters research agencies, supporting understand effects CE implementation what needs be done future.
