Abstract Insect farming is frequently proposed as an emerging industry that can improve the environmental and economic sustainability of food system. However, existing research often overlooks significant challenges. In this article, we identify three bugs in scientific literature on insect farming: (1) overreliance a handful old studies when discussing impacts; (2) pervasive assumption farms will utilise waste; (3) reliance theoretical price projections do not hold up under commercial conditions. We then discuss how promising technologies, despite their benefits, encounter social material challenges practice. Debugging involve producing more realistic life-cycle assessments, which provide policymakers with data needed to make informed decisions for truly sustainable
