Purpose Agri-food small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) must innovate their business models (BMs) to ensure sustainability in increasingly complex economic, social environmental scenarios. This study identifies promising future-oriented trajectories of model innovation (BMI) for these firms, highlighting the key roles new technologies goals. Design/methodology/approach adopted a qualitative approach combining long interview technique template analysis. Information was gathered from informants with extensive knowledge about agri-food sector. conducted Italy. Findings The analysis revealed multiple BMI each three components, namely, value creation, proposition capture. findings also indicate that some themes were common all including increasing importance partnership-based nature BMI, acting as driving force shaping concerns regarding well-being actors involved Research limitations/implications comprehensive view supply chain did not focus on specific perspectives at stage chain.
