Abstract A novel and environmentally benign method was developed for the direct synthesis of 2‐substituted benzimidazoles via a transition metal‐free redox tandem annulation benzyl alcohols ortho ‐nitroanilines in presence strong base, e.g. alkaline alkoxides or hydroxides. good tolerance functional groups observed, affording an array 2‐aryl benzimidazole derivatives high yields. Early mechanistic studies showed that sodium tert ‐butoxide could initiate hydrogen transfer from alcohol to nitro group ‐nitroaniline followed by imine condensation, cyclization, oxidation. This protocol features convenient tactic does not require any external oxidants solvents bioactive benzimidazole‐involving compounds.
