In the eye, ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is not known to contribute visual perception but mainly damage multiple structures. UVR carries higher energy than visible light and high dose exposure causes direct cellular damage, which has an important role in development of cancer. This review provides overview on most recent knowledge oxidative stress (OS) relation noncancer ocular pathologies: various corneal pathologies, cataract, glaucoma age‐related macular degeneration. Possible OS signaling streams mechanisms aging eye are discussed. Excessive through live may seriously increase tissues thus lead advancement serious pathologies. Children especially vulnerable because their larger pupils more transparent media: up 80% a person's lifetime reached before age 18. Therefore, efficient everyday protection sensitive by wearing sunglasses, clear UVR‐blocking spectacles or contact lenses should be considered from early on. Many initiatives taken worldwide inform raise population's awareness about these possible hazards eye.

Visible light synchronizes the human biological clock in suprachiasmatic nuclei of hypothalamus to solar 24-hour cycle. Short wavelengths, perceived as blue color, are strongest synchronizing agent for circadian system that keeps most and psychological rhythms internally synchronized. Circadian rhythm is important optimum function organisms sleep-wake disruptions or chronic misalignment often may lead psychiatric neurodegenerative illness. The beneficial effect on synchronization, sleep quality, mood, cognitive performance depends not only spectral composition but also timing exposure its intensity. Exposure during day suppress melatonin secretion, hormone produced by pineal gland plays crucial role entrainment. While keeping organism's wellbeing, alertness, day, low-intensity directly before bedtime, have serious implications phase cycle durations. This rises inevitably need solutions improve today's modern society where emitting devices ever increasing.

Light therapy can be an effective treatment for mood disorders, suggesting that light is able to affect state in the long term. As a first step understand this effect, we hypothesized might also acutely influence emotion and tested whether short exposures modulate emotional brain responses. During functional magnetic resonance imaging, 17 healthy volunteers listened neutral vocal stimuli while being exposed alternating 40-s periods of blue or green ambient light. Blue (relative green) increased responses voice area temporal cortex hippocampus. processing, connectivity between area, amygdala, hypothalamus was selectively enhanced context illumination, which shows stimulation amygdala are influenced by both decoding information spectral quality These results demonstrate acute its on processing identify unique network merging affective information.

Light plays a critical role in the regulation of numerous aspects physiology and behaviour, including entrainment circadian rhythms sleep. These responses involve melanopsin (OPN4)-expressing photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (pRGCs) addition to rods cones. Nocturnal light exposure rodents has been shown result rapid sleep induction, which key role. However, studies have also that can elevated corticosterone, response is not compatible with To investigate these contradictory findings dissect relative contribution pRGCs rods/cones, we assessed effects different wavelengths on behaviourally defined Here, show blue (470 nm) causes behavioural arousal, elevating corticosterone delaying onset. By contrast, green (530 produces induction. Compared wildtype mice, are altered melanopsin-deficient mice (Opn4-/-), resulting enhanced but delayed induction or white light. We go evokes higher Fos SCN compared sleep-promoting ventrolateral preoptic area (VLPO), whereas produced greater VLPO. Collectively, our data demonstrates nocturnal either an arousal- effect, melanopsin-mediated via neural pathways spectral sensitivities. raise important questions relating how artificial may alter behaviour both work domestic setting.
