The successful recognition of familiar persons is critical for social interactions. Despite extensive research on the neural representations faces, we know little about how such unfold as someone becomes familiar. In three EEG experiments human participants both sexes, elucidated face familiarity and identity emerge from different qualities familiarization: brief perceptual exposure (Experiment 1), media familiarization 2), real-life personal 3). Time-resolved representational similarity analysis revealed that quality has a profound impact familiarity: they were strongly visible after familiarization, weaker absent familiarization. Across all experiments, found no enhancement representation, suggesting independently during Our results emphasize importance extensive, emergence robust representations, constraining models perception memory. In our everyday life, we continuously get to know people, dominantly through their faces. Several neuroscientific experiments showed that familiarization changes the behavioral processing and underlying neural representation of faces others. Here, propose a model process how actually someone. First, purely visual unfamiliar occurs. Second, accumulation associated, nonsensory information refines person representation, finally, one reaches stage where effortless identification very well-known persons We offer here an overview neuroimaging studies, first evaluating in what ways familiar differs and, second, by analyzing fMRI adaptation multivariate pattern analysis results estimate identity-specific is found brain. The available data suggest different aspects emerge gradually as gets more with within same network. novel familiarity identity processing, differential activation long-term memory emotion areas essential for correct identification.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to conceptualize the subtle balancing act between language input and prediction (cognitive priming future input) achieve understanding communicated content. When fails, reconstructive postdiction is initiated. Three memory systems play important roles: working (WM), episodic long-term (ELTM), semantic (SLTM). axiom Ease Language Understanding (ELU) model that explicit WM resources are invoked by a mismatch input-in form rapid automatic multimodal binding phonology-and phonological lexical representations in SLTM. However, if there match phonology output SLTM/ELTM representations, processing continues rapidly implicitly. Method Results In our first ELU approach, we focused on experimental manipulations signal hearing aids background noise cause with LTM representations; both resulted increased dependence WM. Our second-and main approach relevant for review article-focuses relative effects age-related loss three systems. According ELU, predicted be frequently occupied reconstruction what actually heard, resulting disuse phonological/lexical ELTM SLTM results do not depend test modality per se but rather particular system. This will further discussed. Conclusions Related literature decline as precursors dementia fact risk Alzheimer's disease increases substantially over time due loss, possibility lowered may part causal chain linking dementia. The fields of psychology and neuroscience are in the midst an explosion research seeking to understand human imagination - ability form thoughts mental images that stretch beyond what is currently available senses. Imaginative thought proving be remarkably diverse, capturing capacity recall past experiences, consider lies ahead, others' minds, addition other forms creative spontaneous thinking. In first part this article, we introduce integrative framework attempts explain how components a core brain network facilitate interacting features refer as "mind's eye" mind." We then highlight three emerging directions could inform our understanding arises unfolds everyday life.
