We develop a mathematical approach to formally proving that certain neural computations and representations exist based on patterns observed in an organism's behaviour. To illustrate, we provide simple set of conditions under which ant's ability determine how far it is from its nest would logically imply structures isomorphic the natural numbers

Speech perception is heavily influenced by our expectations about what will be said. In this review, we discuss the potential of multivariate analysis as a tool to understand neural mechanisms underlying predictive processes in speech perception. First, advantages approaches and they have added understanding processing from acoustic-phonetic form speech, over syllable identity syntax, its semantic content. Second, suggest that using techniques measure informational content across hierarchically organised speech-sensitive brain areas might enable us specify which prior knowledge sensory signals are combined. Specifically, approach allow decode how different priors, e.g. speaker's voice or topic current conversation, represented at stages incoming result differently represented.

Abstract Perception involves the processing of content or information about world. In what form is this represented? I argue that perception widely compositional. The perceptual system represents many stimulus features (including shape, orientation, and motion) in terms combinations other (such as shape parts, slant tilt, common residual motion vectors). But compositionality can take a variety forms. ways which representations compose are markedly different from sentences thoughts thought to be composed. suggest thesis compositional not itself concrete hypothesis with specific predictions; rather it affords productive framework for developing evaluating empirical hypotheses representations. question just whether compositional, but how . Answering latter provide fundamental insights into perception. This article categorized under: Philosophy > Representation Foundations Cognitive Science Psychology Psychophysics
