Is there a qualitative difference between apes’ and humans ‘ability to estimate others’ mental states’, a.k.a. ‘Theory-of-Mind’? After opting for the idea that expectations are empty profiles recognize particular content when it arrives, I apply same description ‘vicarious expectations’—very probably present in apes. Thus, (empty) vicarious one’s (full) contents distinguished without needing meta-representation. Then, propose: First, enough support Theory-of-Mind (including ‘spontaneous altruism’). Second, since require profile previously built subject activates them, this cannot activate any expectation of states intrinsically impossible him. Third, your think me as distal individual me, therefore, must contents. This ability (the original nucleus human Theory-of-Mind) is essential lifestyle. It involved unpleasant pleasant self-conscious emotions, which respectively contribute ‘social order’ cultural innovations. More basically, makes possible (prelinguistic or linguistic) communication, originally made understanding addressed therefore me.

Abstract In humans, motor resonance effects can be tracked by measuring the enhancement of corticospinal excitability action observation. Uncovering factors driving is crucial for optimizing observation paradigms in experimental and clinical settings. present study, we deepen properties grasping movements. Thirty-five healthy subjects underwent an task presenting right-hand movements differing from their goal. Single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation was applied over left primary cortex at 100, 200, or 300 ms onset visual stimulus depicting action. Motor-evoked potentials were recorded four muscles right hand forearm. Results show a muscle-specific effect 200 after movement but selectively observing socially relevant grasp towards another human being. This correlates with observers’ emotional empathy scores, it followed inhibition post-stimulus onset. No facilitation emerged while intransitive object grasping. evidence highlights social side its dependency on temporal factors.

Abstract. Can we nowadays keep a qualitative difference between the primitive and advanced Theory-of-Mind? The old criteria have become blurry. In addition, it is clear that in ‘apes’ lifestyle’ not necessary to use communicative-cognitive basic abilities which became indispensable ‘the new lifestyle’. Thus, usual conclude apes would some degree such abilities. However, this article tries reformulate defend difference. after underlining contrast two kinds of mental states (‘contents’ ‘expectations’), I apply detection foreign as well. Then, three points are proposed: First, ‘vicarious expectations’ sustain ToM; second, subject can no expectation inner intrinsically impossible for him; third, state interacting with ourselves different person –e.g., thinking what others think us– cannot be vicarious ours, but requires estimation contents. From hypothesis, deduce expectations unable self-conscious emotions or really effective reception pointing gestures. These could appear only when contents’ –i.e., origin ToM– arose.

The automatic copying of other people – imitation is one the most widely studied topics in psychology. In this chapter, we review current evidence for neurophysiological correlates imitation. To do so, focus on heavily- used and influential paradigm that manipulates stimulus-response compatibility conducive to investigation using neuroscientific methods. We distinguish between two distinct mental processes occur during imitation: action representation selection. Observed actions are perceived represented a particular needs be selected executed. Neuroscientific concerning appears relatively robust engages widespread distributed network visual motor regions span ventral stream, as well frontoparietal cortex. contrast, selection far from clear. dominant view literature task indexes relating control imitative tendencies, which rely self-other distinction mechanism uniquely tied human social interaction theory-of-mind network.
