Abstract Human language offers a variety of ways to create meaning, one which is referring entities, objects, or events in the world. One such meaning maker understanding whom what pronoun discourse refers to. To understand pronoun, brain must access matching entities concepts that have been encoded memory from previous linguistic context. Models processing propose internally stored concepts, accessed via exogenous cues as phonological input word, are represented (a)synchronous activities across population neurons active at specific frequency bands. Converging evidence suggests delta band activity (1–3 Hz) involved temporal and representational integration during sentence processing. Moreover, recent advances neurobiology suggest recollection engages neural dynamics similar those occurred encoding. Integrating these two research lines, we here tested hypothesis dynamic patterns, especially range, underlying referential representation, would be reinstated resolution. By leveraging decoding techniques (i.e., similarity analysis) on magnetoencephalogram data set acquired naturalistic story-listening task, provide delta-band underlies representation. Our findings that, spoken comprehension, endogenous representations may proactively retrieved activation their patterns.

ABSTRACT The ability to integrate semantic information into the context of a sentence is essential for human communication. Several studies have shown that predictability final keyword based on influences integration behavioral, neurophysiological, and neural level. However, architecture underlying network interactions across lifespan remains unclear. In this study, 32 healthy participants (30–75 years) performed an auditory cloze probability task during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), requiring lexical decisions sentence's words. Semantic demands were implicitly modulated by presenting sentences with expected, unexpected, anomalous, or pseudoword endings. To elucidate supporting integration, we combined univariate task‐based fMRI analyses seed‐based connectivity between‐network analyses. Behavioral data revealed typical effects, increased being associated longer response latencies reduced accuracy. Univariate results demonstrated left frontal temporal brain activity higher demands. Between‐network highlighted role task‐positive default mode networks processing Furthermore, increasing led number behaviorally relevant interactions, suggesting coupling becomes more successful performance as increase. Our findings complex aging continuum. Stronger between various correlated efficient These may inform future old clinical populations.

ABSTRACT Humans predict upcoming language effortlessly, but the cognitive costs of these predictions remain debated. In this study, we demonstrate that limiting executive resources through a concurrent task reduces effect predictability on reading times. Participants (N=175, replication N=96) read short articles presented word-by-word while completing secondary font colour n-back task, thus varying demand. Language was indexed by word surprisal as derived from generative pre-trained transformer model (GPT-2). Our results show effects increase with age (18–85 years), and across both samples, higher load consistently diminished impact speed. These findings highlight resource-dependent nature predictive mechanisms in comprehension lifespan. We conclude linguistic rely resources, which helps resolve debate about cost processing.

Abstract Adaptive behavior rests on forming predictions based previous statistical regularities encountered in the environment. Such pertain not only to contents of stimuli (“what”) but also their timing (“when”), and both interactively modulate sensory processing. In speech streams, can be formed at multiple hierarchical levels, terms (e.g. single syllables vs. words) (e.g., faster slower time scales). Whether how these hierarchies map onto each other integrating “what” “when” remains unknown. Under one hypothesis neural may link within processing areas: with lower cortical regions mediating interactions for smaller units e.g., syllables, higher areas larger words. Alternatively, between might rest a generic, sensory-independent mechanism, mediated by common attention-related frontoparietal) networks. To address those questions, we manipulated two levels – disyllabic pseudowords while recording activity using magnetoencephalography (MEG) healthy volunteers (N=22). We studied syllable and/or word deviants are modulated predictability, analyzing event-related fields source reconstruction dynamic causal modeling explain observed effects underlying effective connectivity. “When” mismatch responses specific way regards hierarchy, such that deviant words (vs. syllables) were amplified temporal faster) scale. However, modulations source-localized shared network regions, including frontal parietal sources. Effective connectivity analysis showed that, violations integration selectively consistent gain effects. These results suggest brain integrates congruent respect level, this is distributed network. This contrasts recent studies indicating separable networks different
