A key component of microbiome research is understanding the role host genetic influence on gut microbial composition. However, it can be difficult to link genetics with composition because similarity and environmental are often correlated. Longitudinal data supplement our relative processes in microbiome. These reveal environmentally contingent effects, both terms controlling for differences comparing how effects differ by environment. Here, we explore four areas where longitudinal could lend new insights into microbiome: heritability, plasticity, stability, population genetics. We conclude a discussion methodological considerations future studies. For humans animals, genes play shaping measuring these similarities For instance, relatives live together share similar diets lifestyles—forces that also change communities. Abstract Plant microbiome engineering remains a significant challenge due to challenges associated with accurately predicting assembly and function in complex, heterogeneous soil environments. However, host-mediated selection can simplify the process by using plant host phenotype as reporter of function; iteratively selecting microbiomes from hosts desired phenotypes them inoculate subsequent cohorts hosts, artificial steer towards composition producing optimized phenotypes. In this study, we inoculated rice wild microbial communities fallow field, desert, serpentine seep field soils. By challenging these plants drought least stressed across multiple generations, derived simplified that enhanced both growth tolerance rice. Across cycles, within between treatments became increasingly similar, implicating dispersal drivers community composition. With amplicon sequencing data identified specific bacterial taxa improved phenotypes; while many have been previously described promoters, also novel exhibiting strong positive correlation performance. Lastly, resolved 272 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) used MAGs identify functions enriched bacteria driving tolerance. The most significantly functions—particularly glycerol-3-phosphate iron transport—have implicated potential mediators plant-microbe interactions during drought. Altogether, demonstrate provides an efficient framework for through identification individual

The plant core microbiota transmitted by seeds have been demonstrated to exist in and adult plants of several crops for multiple generations. This review delves into concept these microbiota, sources, how they change breeding, as well effects on plants, based relevant literature. Finally, significant potential incorporating practical application seed-transmitted microbial breeding is emphasized.

Microbial communities are essential for plant health, but using these relationships to enhance growth and pest protection is challenging. Leveraging the natural mechanisms plants employ manage with microbes one promising means selectively engineer whole microbial beneficial properties. This approach, known as host-guided selection, has been successful in some model species targeting performance traits (e.g., biomass). However, few studies use crop or focus on defensive resistance). Our goal was naturally tomato root-associated microbiomes that increase resistance insect pests. First, we used an iterative soil inoculation process insect-suppressive rhizosphere reduce damage from aphid feeding ( Macrosiphum euphorbiae) caterpillar defoliation Manduca sexta, Spodoptera exigua). We then characterized bacterial fungal of soils associated differences metabarcoding approaches. Overall, microbiome selection produced transient performance, unaffected. In four nine generations, population rate significantly lower rhizospheres selected “low” where abundance reduced by up 20%. Correspondingly minor shifts relative occurred communities. network analysis indicated disrupted assembly, resulting community complexity connectivity fewer structurally important taxa compared uninfested controls. our results highlight critical factors engineering microbiomes, particularly guild stability.
