Although iron (Fe) is the most biologically abundant transition metal, it highly toxic when accumulates as Fe2+, forming a labile Fe pool and favoring Fenton reaction. This oxidative scenario leads to type of caspase-independent programmed cell death, referred ferroptosis, where following processes take place: (i) Fe2+ overload, (ii) glutathione peroxidase 4 inactivation, (iii) lipid peroxidation, (iv) depletion. The present study sought evaluate consequences administration on ferroptosis induction in Caenorhabditis elegans. We demonstrated higher mortality, increased reduced activity, morphological damage dopaminergic neurons upon overload. Pharmacological intervention at level peroxidation with ferrostatin-1 (250 μM) mitigated returned biochemical parameters basal levels, revealing potential this therapeutical approach.
