Drug residues have been detected in aquatic environments around the world and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of most used classes. Therefore, it is important to verify physiological effects these products on exposed non-target organisms such as fish. Through a meta-analytic review, we evaluated NSAIDs oxidative stress biomarkers Overall, Diclofenac was frequently tested drug systematically selected studies while acute hydric exposure types were prevalent among studies. The meta-analysis revealed that (1) chronic subchronic exposures decreased catalase (CAT) activity, increased glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity; (2) GPx (3) low concentrations superoxide dismutase (SOD) (4) Paracetamol SOD activity lipid peroxidation levels, but reduced S-transferase (GST) (5) activity. In conclusion, our results demonstrated fish sensitive presenting significant alterations biomarkers, especially enzyme. This enzyme exhibits strong potential biomarker stood out NSAID altered largest number drawing attention its risk contrast, ibuprofen did not change evaluated. These data demonstrate impact emerging contaminants need for strategies mitigate effects.
