According to the latest research, marine products have greatest potential for microplastic (MPs) contamination. Therefore, their presence in terrestrial food has not managed attract much attention—despite fact that future they may represent a serious environmental risk. Research conducted Europe and US indicated of MPs tap water, bottled table salt, honey, beer snails human consumption. The yet been evaluated Latin America. This work focused on evaluating two widely consumed beverages: milk soft drinks. Furthermore, honey samples were analyzed compared findings literature. All sourced Ecuador. In order determine correlations with intensity anthropogenic activity, both industrially processed craft studied. For analysis, an improvement previous techniques used was applied. technique uses microfiltration followed by degradation organic matter hydrogen peroxide—and finally, continuous rinsing deionized water. Size ranges established between 0.8–200 mm. number microplastics found 10 100 MPs/L, average around 40 MPs/L. sizes particles study are range 13.45 6742.48 μm fibers, 2.48 247.54 fragments. From composition analysis carried out FTIR, we able confirm 12% microplastic. results generally showed greater those registered Europe, probably due processing methods rather than pollution. Regarding composition, main polyethylene, polypropylene polyacrylamide.

Background Microplastics (MPs) are omnipresent in the environment, including human food chain; a likely important contributor to exposure is drinking water. Objective To undertake systematic review of MP contamination water and estimate quantitative exposures. Methods The protocol for employed has been published PROSPERO (PROSPERO 2019, Registration number: CRD42019145290). MEDLINE, EMBASE Web Science were searched from launch 3rd June 2020, selecting studies that used procedural blank samples validated method particle composition analysis. Studies reviewed within narrative A bespoke risk bias (RoB) assessment tool was used. Results 12 included review: six tap (TW) bottled (BW). Meta-analysis not appropriate due high statistical heterogeneity (I2>95%). Seven rated low RoB all confirmed most common polymers identified polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polypropylene (PP), Methodological variability observed throughout experimental protocols. For example, minimum size particles extracted analysed, which varied 1 100 μm, seen be critical data reported. maximum reported 628 MPs/L TW 4889 BW, detected European samples. Based on typical consumption data, this may extrapolated yearly adult uptake 458,000 MPs 3,569,000 BW. Conclusions This first appraises quality existing evidence estimates precautionary principle should adopted address concerns possible health effects MPs. Future research aim standardise protocols aid comparison elevate quality.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants that cause diverse impacts on soil ecosystems. As integral members of food webs, fauna exert key ecological functions such as litter decomposition, nutrient cycling, and energy flow. MPs may damage their functions, posing health risks. Meanwhile, can act MPs. Hereby, we aim to summarize the interactions between fauna. This article first introduces source, occurrence characteristics in soils, then highlights fauna, particularly earthworms nematodes. negative growth, reproduction, lifespan, survival via toxicity mechanisms ingestion bioaccumulation, histopathological damage, oxidative stress, DNA genotoxicity, reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, metabolic disorders, gut microbiota dysbiosis. also interact with other produce combined In turn, contribute formation breakdown MPs, alter migration soil, even transfer accumulated higher trophic levels. Finally, given large knowledge gap regarding interaction several future research priorities recommended.

Abstract The stability of polymers against environmental factors, chemicals, microorganisms, and hydrolysis has challenged society with the accumulation plastic waste its management worldwide. Large amounts litter accumulate in environment disintegrate into microplastics (small pieces less than 5 mm size), a topic real concern especially for products applications where plastics are used short time before becoming waste, they difficult to recover after use remain environment. Whether biodegradable can be one solutions problem is question very often raised this context. Although appears highly promising based on recent past studies, several aspects need considered further regarding sustainability, acceptability, degradability complex natural Intensive efforts invested developing new environmentally smart mechanisms degradation present viewpoint article discusses scenario acceptability opportunities challenges offer solving their impact

BACKGROUND: Microplastics (MPs) have contaminated all compartments of the marine environment including biota such as seafood; ingestion from sources is one two major uptake routes identified for human exposure.OBJECTIVES: The objectives were to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis levels MP contamination in seafood subsequently estimate annual uptake.METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web Science searched launch (1947, 1974, 1900, respectively) up October 2020 studies reporting content species.Mean, standard deviations, ranges MPs found collated.Studies appraised systematically using bespoke risk bias (RoB) assessment tool.RESULTS: Fifty included 19 meta-analysis.Evidence was available on four phyla: mollusks, crustaceans, fish, echinodermata. The majority reported <1 MP=g, with 26% rated having high RoB, mainly due analysis or weaknesses.Mollusks collected off coasts Asia most heavily contaminated, coinciding trends sea.According statistical summary, 0-10:5 MPs=g 0:1-8:6 0-2:9 1 MP=g echinodermata.Maximum estimated be close 55,000 particles.Statistical, sample, methodological heterogeneity high.DISCUSSION: This first review, our knowledge, assess quantify its consumption, suggesting that action must considered order reduce exposure via consumption.Further high-quality research standardized methods needed cement scientific evidence exposures.

The field of polymer science recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. excellent material properties a wide range plastics (generally used as synonym for polymers) have opened many new opportunities in lightweight packaging, agricultural fields improved crop production, cosmetics, detergents, and more advanced applications, among others. During the journey science, various topics attracted particular attention because they promised technological advancements or challenges relevant to needs time. Each has led intense research, development, scientific discussion. Since early 1970s, awareness increasingly been drawn pollution arising from plastic disposal related solutions. topic become urgent past few years, becoming focus widespread interest debate beyond boundaries. An important question is, can we hold polymers responsible issue? In this Perspective, consider role benefits everyday life increased imbalance between their use efficient end-of-life options, which leads critical issues such pollution. We touch on these issues, propose possible solutions, offer perspective recycling (mechanical, (bio)chemical, organic), environmental biodegradation polymers, promising design concepts. Our discussion highlights that is not solely problem but an issue whole society must bear responsibility solve together.
