Abstract Theory and experiments show that diverse ecosystems often have higher levels of function (for instance, biomass production), yet it remains challenging to identify the biological mechanisms responsible. We synthesize developments in coexistence theory into a general theoretical framework linking community ecosystem function. Our framework, which we term functional theory, identifies three components determining total coexisting species. The first component directly corresponds niche differences enable pairwise species coexistence, complementarity from additive partition biodiversity effects. second measures whether functioning also competitive fitness, providing missing link between partition’s selection effect modern theory’s concept equalization. third is least well-studied: reducing imbalances increases difference’s positive on Using mechanistic model resource competition, our can how traits drive competition productivity, confirm expectations by fitting this data classic plant experiment. Furthermore, apply simulations communities with multiple functions or more than two species, demonstrating relationships niche, predict beyond case studied classical theory. Taken together, results highlight fundamental links its consequences for function, an avenue towards predictive community–ecosystem feedbacks.
