Particle shape is an important factor affecting the strength and deformation of coarse materials in dumps. However, conducting research on particle current laboratory experiments, there exists no classification standard for dump. Considering project high-bench dump Jiangxi Province, based random construction method, this study determined characteristic particles grain material dumping site by combining field investigation results, large-scale direct shear tests, numerical analysis. Further, influence mechanism content mechanical characteristics were analyzed. The results showed that increase enhanced irregularity shape, increased internal friction angle between particles, reduced cohesion Moreover, with normal stress, changed from insignificant to gradually enhanced, although increasing trend slowed down. constructed model can well solve effects occlusion, nesting, neglected spherical model, fitting degree better. coarse-grain primarily block, strip, flake. three types under low stress did not affect properties stress-strain curve reflected dominant Specifically, block sample exhibited most same followed strip sample, flake exerting least influence. provide a theoretical basis long-term safe operation, disaster monitoring, early warning high bench
