In this study, a water-soluble quaternary ammonium salt (QAS)-functionalized montmorillonite (MMT) was fabricated using mechanochemical method as high-performance water lubrication additive. The intercalation of QAS into the MMT layer expands spacing MMT, but does not affect hydrophilicity MMT. ultrathin QAS-functionalized (QAS-MMT) demonstrated excellent water-stable dispersion and can be used water-based Only 0.1% addition reduce friction coefficient by more than 71.4% wear volume about 58.8% when compared to water, demonstrating its reduction antiwear performance. frictional mechanism indicates that physical adsorption film, together with chemical reaction endows QAS-MMT additives outstanding tribological performance, provides for contact steel/steel pairs, prevents steel surface from being further worn.

Abstract Organic montmorillonite, a typical clay mineral, has been used as high temperature grease thickener. Although naturally occurring montmorillonite (MMT) is commercially available, readily synthesizable alternative needed to achieve uniform elemental composition and controllable physical chemical properties. Synthetic MMT with crystal structure similar that of was prepared by one-step hydrothermal method. Different organic samples were subjected alkyl chain intercalation dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, tetradecyl cetyl chloride octadecyl (OTAC-MMT). greases using the four chains intercalated thickeners. Due longest OTAC, OTAC-MMT smallest particle size had most different arrangement interlayer molecules, largest basal spacing, highest hydrophobicity content. The rheological behaviour tribological results showed best mechanical stability, colloidal stability thermal among synthetic greases. In addition, stable good anti-wear anti-friction properties under load conditions. This study expected promote expansion applications in manufacturing related potential near future.
