Background: Excessive use of empty words in academic texts is a significant impediment to effective communication, often complicating the clarity and reducing comprehensibility scholarly writing. Purpose: This systematic scoping review investigates nature, causes, consequences excessive words, alongside strategies for mitigating this issue writing, differentiating between nuanced connotations ‘verbosity’ ‘wordiness’. Methods: Employing detailed search strategy, engaged two electronic databases – Scopus Google Scholar, initially identifying 256 studies. PRISMA-ScR protocol ‘PCC’ mnemonic (Population, Context, Concept) inclusion exclusion criteria, 30 English-language studies directly addressing reduction were included. Results: The synthesis selected research revealed that while widely recognized as challenge authors academics, problem remains underexplored. analysis clarified distinction ‘wordiness’– terms used interchangeably but with distinct implications Key factors contributing include complex sentence structures, unnecessary nominalizations, redundant phrases or overly vocabulary. Effective wordiness involve simplifying constructions, employing more direct language, eliminating redundancy, strategically using verbosity positive rhetorical effects. While objective clinical structured examination (OSCE) is a worldwide recognized and effective method to assess skills of undergraduate medical students, the latest Ottawa conference on assessment competences raised vigorous debates regarding future innovations OSCE.
