Anaerobic digestion was one of the first bioenergy strategies developed, yet interactions microbial community that is responsible for production methane are still poorly understood. For example, it has only recently been recognized bacteria oxidize organic waste components can forge electrical connections with methane-producing microbes through biologically produced, protein-based, conductive circuits. This direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) faster than exchange via diffusive carriers, such as H2. DIET also more resilient to perturbations increases in load inputs or toxic compounds. However, current digester practices rarely predominates. Improvements anaerobic associated addition electrically materials have attributed increased DIET, but experimental verification lacking. deficiency may soon be overcome improved understanding diversity capable which leading molecular tools determining extent DIET. Here we review microbiology suggest monitoring digesters, and propose approaches re-engineering design encourage

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) has extensive applications in various fields; its release into ecosystems and the potential toxic effects on organisms are becoming major concerns. Here, we investigated of TBBPA anaerobic digestion, whose process is closely related to carbon cycles under conditions. The results revealed that exhibited dose-dependent hormesis-like methane production from glucose, i.e., presence 0.1 mg/L increased rate by 8.79%, but 1.0-4.0 caused 3.45-28.98% decrement. We found was bound tyrosine-like proteins extracellular polymeric substances anaerobes induced increase reactive oxygen species, slight accumulation stimulated metabolism activities high apoptosis anaerobes. Owing differences between individual tolerance, at acidogenesis hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis, whereas higher levels (i.e., mg/L) severely restrained all processes acidogenesis, acetogenesis, methanogenesis. Along with bisphenol (BPA) produced Longilinea sp. Pseudomonas sp., methanogenic pathway partly shifted acetate-dependent hydrogen-dependent direction, monoxide dehydrogenase acetyl-CoA decarbonylase/synthase were inhibited, while acetate kinase F420 hormetically affected. These findings elucidated mechanism syntrophic consortium responses TBBPA, supplementing environmental risks brominated flame retardants.

Electrochemical methods have been reported to strengthen anaerobic digestion, but the continuous electrical power supply and complicated electrode installed inside digester restricted it from practical use. In this study, a dynamic magnetic field (DMF) was placed outside induce an electromotive force electrically promote digestion. With applied DMF, of 0.14 mV generated in sludge, 65.02% methane increment obtained digestion waste-activated sludge. Experiments on each stage showed that acidification methanogenesis involve electron transfer respiration chains were promoted with while solubilization hydrolysis less related not enhanced. Further analysis indicated induced polarized protein-like substances sludge increase conductivity capacitance Electrotrophic methanogens (Methanothrix) exoelectrogens (Exiguobacterium) enriched DMF. The kinetic isotope effect test confirmed accelerated Consistently, concentration ratio co-enzymes (NADH/NAD+ F420H2/F420) reflects exchange significantly increased. Applying DMF seemed more accessible strategy

Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) provides an innovative way to achieve efficient methanogenesis, and this study proposes a new approach upregulate the DIET pathway by enhancing quorum sensing (QS). Based on long-term reactor performance, QS enhancement achieved more vigorous methanogenesis with 98.7% COD removal efficiency. In control system, failure occurred at accumulated acetate of 7420 mg COD/L lowered pH 6.04, much lower 41.9% was observed. The significant in QS-enhancing system supported higher expression conductive pili c-Cyts cytochrome secretion-related genes, resulting 12.7- 10.3-fold improvements. Moreover, also improved energy production capability, increase F-type V/A-type ATPase 6.3- 4.2-fold, effect probably provided for nanowires secretion. From perspective community structure, increased abundance Methanosaeta Geobacter from 54.3 17.6% 63.0 33.8%, respectively. Furthermore, genes involved carbon dioxide reduction alcohol dehydrogenation 0.6- 7.1-fold, Taken together, indicates positive effects chemicals stimulate advances understanding environments such as anaerobic digesters sediments.
