The expanding use of chitosan in sewage and sludge treatment processes raises concerns about its potential environmental impacts. However, investigations the impacts on anaerobic digestion where is present at substantial levels are sparse. This study therefore aims to fill this knowledge gap through both long-term batch tests. results showed that 4 g/kg total suspended solid (TSS) had no acute effects methane production, but 8–32 TSS inhibited production by 7.2–30.3%. Mass balance metabolism organic analyses indicated restrained transfer substrates from phase liquid phase, macromolecules micromolecules, finally methane. Further exploration revealed suppressed secretion extracellular polymeric substances anaerobes occupying connection sites indigenous carbohydrates increased mass resistance between substrates, which thereby lowered metabolic activities anaerobes. Although could be partly degraded anaerobes, it much more persistent compared with organics sludge. Microbial community key enzyme encoding gene further inhibition CO2-dependent methanogenesis was severer than acetate-dependent methanogenesis.
