As an important group of widespread organic substances in aquatic ecosystems, dissolved matter (DOM) plays essential role carbon recycling and transformation processes. The photochemical behavior DOM is one the main ways it participates these processes, attracts extensive attention. However, due to a variety sources water conditions, including both freshwater seawater environments, properties exhibit great differences. Nowadays, large number studies have focused on generation process reactive species (RS) from sunlit DOM, while little effort has been made so far provide comprehensive summary especially fresh saline ecosystems. In this review, we analyzed research hotspot photochemistry over last 30 years, summarizing photoreactive natural environments containing (both seawater) listing factors affecting rate, yield, RS photoproduction. Compared with freshwater, unique characteristics such as high pH value, ionic strength, halide ions, which affect photogeneration RS, photoconversion process, well reaction pathways various environmental substances. general, DOM-induced surface impacts toxic effects pollutants can even contribute significantly Earth's cycle, would potential implications for human ecological health.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are attracting increasing attention due to their persistence potential ecological risks. This review critically summarizes the effects of photo-oxidation on physical, chemical, biological behaviors MNPs in aquatic terrestrial environments. The core this paper explores how photo-oxidation-induced surface property changes affect adsorption toward contaminants, stability mobility water porous media, as well transport pollutants such organic (OPs) heavy metals (HMs). It then reviews photochemical processes with coexisting constituents, highlighting critical factors affecting MNPs, contribution phototransformation other contaminants. distinct mechanism aged pointed out, terms toxicity organisms, biofilm formation, planktonic microbial growth, soil sediment community function. Furthermore, research gaps perspectives put forward, regarding underlying interaction mechanisms natural constituents under conditions, combined fate microbiological effect photoaged especially biotransformation pollutants.

Plastic wastes are becoming one of the most serious environmental pollutants because their high antidegradation properties and damage they cause to human health. More seriously, plastics can become smaller in size form microplastics (MPs), attributing oxidation, weathering, fragmentation processes. The influx MPs into water bodies seriously affects quality aquatic environment. Therefore, it is necessary summarize aging process MPs. In this review, we first provided an overview definition source Then analyzed potential pathways current environment elaborated on changes physicochemical during (e.g., particle size, crystallinity, thermodynamic properties, surface functional groups). addition, possible synergistic contamination with other illustrated. Finally, mechanisms generation toxicity persistent free radicals (EPFRs) that may be generated photoaging were described, feasibility using photoaged as photosensitizers catalyze photoreactive degradation organic proposed. Overall, review provides a comprehensive objective evaluation behavior
