As an important group of widespread organic substances in aquatic ecosystems, dissolved matter (DOM) plays essential role carbon recycling and transformation processes. The photochemical behavior DOM is one the main ways it participates these processes, attracts extensive attention. However, due to a variety sources water conditions, including both freshwater seawater environments, properties exhibit great differences. Nowadays, large number studies have focused on generation process reactive species (RS) from sunlit DOM, while little effort has been made so far provide comprehensive summary especially fresh saline ecosystems. In this review, we analyzed research hotspot photochemistry over last 30 years, summarizing photoreactive natural environments containing (both seawater) listing factors affecting rate, yield, RS photoproduction. Compared with freshwater, unique characteristics such as high pH value, ionic strength, halide ions, which affect photogeneration RS, photoconversion process, well reaction pathways various environmental substances. general, DOM-induced surface impacts toxic effects pollutants can even contribute significantly Earth's cycle, would potential implications for human ecological health.

Recent studies showed that land is the most important sink for microplastics (MPs); however, limited information available on photoaging processes of surface MPs are exposed to air. Herein, this study developed two in situ spectroscopic methods systematically explore effect air humidity MP using a microscope Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and laser Raman microscope, which were equipped with control system. Polyethylene microplastics, polystyrene poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-MPs) used as model MPs. Our results relative (RH) could significantly influence oxygen-containing moieties generated from photo-oxidation, especially PVC-MPs. As RH level varied 10 90%, decrease photogenerated carbonyl group an increase hydroxyl observed. This be attributed involvement water molecules production groups, subsequently inhibited generation. Moreover, adsorption coexisting contaminants (i.e., tetracycline) photoaged exhibited strong dependence, assigned hydrogen bonding between tetracycline carbonyls aged hydroxyls. reveals ubiquitous but previously overlooked aging route, may account changed physiochemical properties under solar irradiation.

Both zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and microplastics (MPs) were extracted from one commercial sunscreen, while other ingredients removed based on the "like dissolves like" principle. MPs further by acidic digestion of ZnO NPs using HCl characterized as spherical particles approximately 5 μm with layered sheets in an irregular shape surface. Although stable presence simulated sunlight water after 12 h exposure, promoted photooxidation producing hydroxyl radicals, a 2.5-fold increase carbonyl index degree surface oxidation. As result oxidation, more soluble fragmented to shapes sharp edges. We then compared cytotoxicity primary secondary (25–200 mg/L) HaCaT cell line viability loss subcellular damages. The cellular uptake transformed was enhanced over 20%, caused higher pristine ones, evidenced 46% lower viability, 220% lysosomal accumulation, 69% reactive oxygen species, 27% mitochondrial loss, 72% superoxide at 200 mg/L. Our study for first time explored activation derived products revealed high MPs, providing new evidence effects human health.
