Bisphenol A (BPA), as a typical leachable additive from microplastics and one of the most productive bulk chemicals, is widely distributed in sediments, sewers, wastewater treatment plants, where active sulfur cycling takes place. However, effect BPA on transformation, particularly toxic H2S production, has been previously overlooked. This work found that at environmentally relevant levels (i.e., 50–200 mg/kg total suspended solids, TSS) promoted release soluble compounds increased gas production by 14.3–31.9%. The tryptophan-like proteins microbe extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) can spontaneously adsorb BPA, which an enthalpy-driven reaction (ΔH = −513.5 kJ mol–1, ΔS −1.60 mol–1K –1, ΔG −19.52 mol–1 35 °C). binding changed composition structure EPSs, improved direct electron transfer capacity thereby promoting bioprocesses organic hydrolysis sulfate reduction. In addition, presence enriched functional microbes (e.g., Desulfovibrio Desulfuromonas) responsible for mineralization inorganic reduction abundance related genes involved ATP-binding cassette transporters metabolism Sat AspB), anaerobic transformation. deepens our understanding interaction between transformation occurring environments.
