A low concentration of an easily biodegradable substrate (EBS) promotes the cometabolism antibiotics in receiving water. However, a high EBS wastewater treatment plants is associated with negative effect on antibiotic metabolism. In this study, we aimed to determine effects different concentrations (at lab-scale using synthetic and acetate as sole carbon source besides sulfamethoxazole) sulfamethoxazole (SMX) biodegradation performance underlying molecular mechanisms SMX biodegradation. We observed decreased efficiency (approximately 65%) at 100% absence EBS). Metagenomic analysis suggested that catalytic activity enzyme E.2.7.11.1 (coded by K12132) one-third compared case where was absent (P < 0.01). contrast, E.7.1.1.2, which can participate electron transfer chains mitochondria aerobic bacteria, top enriched. Furthermore, enzymes E.3.4.16.4 contribute drug resistance functional species (e.g., Microbacterium_sp. Pseudomonas_sp._A-1) showed significantly concentration. These results demonstrate significant decrease caused electronic respiration enhancement main factor limiting metabolic potential SMX.
