Although N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) is biodegradable, normal activated sludge exhibits poor NMP biodegradation unless it acclimated with for an extended time. In this work, glucose-acclimated biomass (GAB) was over two months to obtain NMP-acclimated (NAB). NAB superior GAB biodegradation, and correlated higher abundances of the genera Mycobacterium, Amaricoccus, Thauera in NAB. However, when bioaugmented Methylobacterium organophilum or Sphingomonas melonis, which were isolated from based on their growth NAB, immediately showed rapid NMP. M. S. melonis accelerating acceleration proportional mass added. A key finding that limiting step mineralization monomethylamine, NMP-biodegradation intermediate also inhibitory. Bioaugmenting accelerated by enhancing monomethylamine removal, being melonis. The documented impact bioaugmentation can make especially valuable response input a toxicant.

N-Methyl Pyrrolidone Manusfacturing Wastewater as the Electron Donor for Denitrification: from Bench to Pilot Scale DOI

Actual wastewater generated from N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) manufacture was used as electron donor for tertiary denitrification. The organic components of NMP were mainly and monomethylamine (CH3NH2), their biodegradation released ammonium that nitrified to nitrate also had be denitrified. Bench-scale experiments documented alternating denitrification nitrification realized effective total-nitrogen removal. Ammonium in the aerobic reactor then denitrified when actual endogenous exogenous nitrate. Whereas TN removals occurred step, DOC CH3NH2 stages. genera Thauera Paracoccus important reactor; stage, Amaricoccus Sphingobium played key roles biodegrading intermediates NMP, while Nitrospira responsible NH4+ oxidation NO3–. Pilot-scale demonstration achieved a two-stage vertical baffled bioreactor (VBBR) which removal sequential anoxic-oxic treatment without biomass recycle. Although bench-scale reactors VBBR different configurations, both effectively removed total nitrogen through same mechanisms. Thus, an N-containing compound industrial could drive total-N tertiary-treatment scenario.
