The discharge of organic and inorganic nitrogenous pollutants in wastewater leads to eutrophication disrupts the ecological balance. Therefore, pressing need for an effective treatment method has become increasingly evident. Although N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) is biodegradable, normal activated sludge exhibits poor NMP biodegradation unless it acclimated with for an extended time. In this work, glucose-acclimated biomass (GAB) was over two months to obtain NMP-acclimated (NAB). NAB superior GAB biodegradation, and correlated higher abundances of the genera Mycobacterium, Amaricoccus, Thauera in NAB. However, when bioaugmented Methylobacterium organophilum or Sphingomonas melonis, which were isolated from based on their growth NAB, immediately showed rapid NMP. M. S. melonis accelerating acceleration proportional mass added. A key finding that limiting step mineralization monomethylamine, NMP-biodegradation intermediate also inhibitory. Bioaugmenting accelerated by enhancing monomethylamine removal, being melonis. The documented impact bioaugmentation can make especially valuable response input a toxicant.

Actual wastewater generated from N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) manufacture was used as electron donor for tertiary denitrification. The organic components of NMP were mainly and monomethylamine (CH3NH2), their biodegradation released ammonium that nitrified to nitrate also had be denitrified. Thus, an N-containing compound industrial could drive total-N tertiary-treatment scenario.
