Dissolved natural organic matter (NOM) significantly influences the performance of water treatment processes. It is generally recognized that NOM acts as a radical scavenger, thus inhibiting degradation pollutants in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). This study examined impacts 8 different isolates on 4-chlorophenol (CP), representative phenolic pollutant, sulfate (SO4•-)-based AOPs. We developed an improved probe method to measure steady-state concentration SO4•- ([SO4•-]ss) both absence and presence NOM. Results show adding 1.00 mgC L-1 resulted only 1.3-3.4% decrease [SO4•-]ss. However, apparent rate constants CP decreased by 76-88%. discrepancy indicates scavenging cannot be primary mechanism for observed inhibition. proposed primarily reducing agent, reacting with phenoxy intermediates generated from single-electron SO4•-. Based this hypothesis, we validated kinetic model using experimental data. The reductive capacity NOM, determined model, correlates positively its electron-donating capacity. These findings enhance understanding NOM's role SO4•--based AOPs provide foundation developing strategies mitigate adverse effects.
