Both ecological regime shifts and carbon cycling in lakes have been subjects of global debates recent years. However, the direct linkage between them is poorly understood. Here, we selected Lake Baiyangdian, a representative large shallow lake with co-existence macrophyte-dominated area (MDA) algae-dominated (ADA) eastern China, as case study to better understand relationship organic (OC) burial lakes. Based on Bayesian isotopic mixing modelling C/N ratios δ13C values, sediment OC primarily autochthonous origin. The mean rate (OCBR) was 39 g C m−2 yr−1 before eutrophication occurred 1990 increased approximately 2.7-fold 106 after eutrophication. Partial least squares path revealed that this change can be largely attributed enhanced primary productivity rapid result intensified human perturbation (notably nutrient input land use changes). Regarding spatial patterns, OCBR higher MDA than ADA, which may related different mineralization processes debris from macrophytes algae. We deduced decrease an increase might occur shift state, leading major ecosystem dynamics. Primarily, by enhancing productivity. once levels reach critical range, ecosystems lead significant reduction fixation capacity Therefore, more attention should given avoiding eutrophic lakes, such alter cycling.
