Abstract The fate of organic carbon (OC) in most river‐dominated ocean margins (RiOMars) has undergone a noticeable transformation with the increased sediment retention engineering watersheds. In East China Sea (ECS), and influence bulk OC have been broadly studied. However, response different mechanisms protection under not investigated, hindering our understanding factors that control deposition. this study, we isolated fractions, analyzed basic parameters sediments, compared previous study's data to reveal how deposition responded transformation. Our research indicates leads reduction associated minerals sorting occluded by plant debris resulting decomposition mineralization OC. affects mechanism binding reactive iron (Fe R ), increasing Fe ‐protected content. Still, co‐precipitation intense redox environment mud deposit decrease stability. Taken together, impact is increase risk weaken preservation ability RiOMars as sinks. This study implications for passive subject watersheds worldwide deserves more attention.
