Abstract Naturally occurring abiotic dechlorination reactions in clayey soils can serve as an important attenuation mechanism for groundwaters impacted by chlorinated solvents such trichloroethene (TCE). Potential include both reductive (anoxic) and oxidative (oxic) that are facilitated ferrous minerals. However, tools to provide lines of evidence reactions, ultimately screening‐level estimates rate constants be incorporated into site fate transport models, yet widely accepted these systems. Herein, coupled bench‐ field‐scale testing at nine locations within the saturated zone showed measurement reduced gases field‐collected samples was inconclusive indicating situ dechlorination. use 1% (v/v) HCl extractions X‐ray diffraction (XRD) mineral composition provided information needed estimate TCE clays, thereby serving a potential screening tool investigation. While corresponding estimating clay not demonstrated, hydroxyl radical generation measured each batch experiments correlated hydrogen peroxide concentrations groundwater near sand‐clay interface. Thus, this observation provides (to our knowledge) first line ongoing reactive oxygen species is sand–clay (oxic–anoxic) interface, potentially means facilitate mitigate back‐diffusion from clay.
