The Xiao Bei mainstream, located in the middle reaches of Yellow River, plays a vital role regulating quality river water. Our study leveraged 73 years hydrological data (1951–2023) to investigate long-term runoff trends and seasonal variations mainstream its two key tributaries, Wei Fen Rivers. results indicated significant decline over time, with notable interannual fluctuations an uneven distribution within year. Rivers contributed 19.75% 3.59% total respectively. Field monitoring was conducted at 11 locations along investigated reach Bei, assessing eight water parameters (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), phosphorus (TP), permanganate index (CODMn), 5-day biochemical (BOD5)). showed that during period generally classified as Class III. Water confluence points River were higher compared mainstream. After these tributaries merged into local sections show increased concentrations, exhibiting spatial fluctuations. Considering mass flux process transmission quantity water, annual NH3-N inputs from accounted for 11.5% 67.1%, respectively, TP 6.8% 66.18%. These findings underscore critical pollutant load highlighting urgent need effective pollution management strategies targeting improve overall River. This sheds light on spatiotemporal changes runoff, quality, providing valuable insights enhance protection River’s environment.
