Dark fermentation is a promising method for hydrogen (H2) production utilizing the metabolic pathways of diverse microbial communities. This process can be carried out without need light, making it easier and more efficient to operate in different environments at lower cost. It also utilizes wide range substrates, highly adaptable waste-to-energy applications. Clostridium spp. are particularly favored this due their versatile metabolism, ability utilize high H2 yields. Anaerobes facultative anaerobes mostly used studies hydrogenase enzyme activity pathways. A pH 5.5–6.5 temperature 30–37 °C mesophiles 55–60 thermophiles usually preferred addition other parameters such as hydraulic retention time substrate used. The highest yield 9.39 mol H2/mol sucrose consumed was obtained by C. beijerinckii using under batch mode conditions 37 6–7. review analyzes bacterial species examines influence optimized required on bioreactor operating modes.
