Peracetic acid (PAA) has been extensively investigated as an alternative disinfectant for water and wastewater treatments. However, the photochemical transformation of PAA in sunlit surface waters not previously investigated. For first time, photosensitized was here observed chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM)-enriched solutions under simulated solar irradiation. Triplet CDOM (3CDOM*) is proposed to play a key role phototransformation processes. Using triplet model compounds, reaction rate constant 3CDOM* with can be estimated around 1.1 × 108 M-1 s-1. The mechanism involves both energy- electron-transfer. CH3COO• generated from between excited triplets. Furthermore, HO• reactive species (i.e., CH3COOO• CH3COO•) are involved CDOM-enriched solutions. These (including HO•, CH3COOO•, also removal contaminants emerging concerns (CECs). Overall, current study provided new insights into irradiation enhancement could useful economically beneficial advanced oxidation process CEC abatement.
