Pyrogenic carbons (PCs), with varying structures depending on the materials and thermal treatment conditions, have been extensively used to enhance anaerobic digestion by mediating electron transfer. However, underlying mechanism has yet be explored. Herein, redirection enhancement of direct interspecies transfer (DIET) pathway were evidenced, along upregulated electrochemical properties structural proteins in methanogenic consortia. Further, we found that PCs featured trade-off "biopseudocapacitor" "bioconductor" during treatment, as endowed evolution oxygen-containing functional groups (for charging discharging) graphitic structure conductivity). Correspondingly, their effect syntrophic methanogenesis (SM) was realized between generally acknowledged bioconductor role pseudocapacitive effect, highlighted enhanced SM reduced from more balanced exchange capacities. Consequently, a performance comparison obtained at 450, 650, 850 °C resulted an optimized sample 650 °C, where 61.3 ± 1.8% increase methane production rate 33.4 1.1% decrease lag time observed. Microbiologically, DIET-active Methanothrix Geobacteraceae flourished intra- extracellular transport channels established. These findings provide new insights into renewable potential regulating energy-harvesting biochemical processes toward carbon neutrality.
