Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) flexibility is an emerging concept recognizing that individuals will cope best with stressors probably be those using their hormones in the most adaptive way. Exposure of females to stressful conditions during pregnancy or oogenesis has a profound effect on the phenotype their offspring. For example, offspring behavioural may show altered patterns in terms consistency and average level performance. Maternal stress can also affect development axis leading alterations physiological response. However, majority evidence comes from studies utilising acute stressors exogenous glucocorticoids, little is known about chronic maternal stress, particularly context lasting throughout entire reproductive lifespan. To bridge this knowledge gap, we exposed female sticklebacks unpredictable environmental breeding season. We quantified activity, sheltering anxiety-like behaviour three successive clutches these females, calculated Intra-class Correlation Coefficients for behaviours siblings half-siblings. an stressor measured peak cortisol levels. An environment had no modifying inter-clutch responsivity, but resulted diversification behaviour, indicated by increased between-individual variability within families. This represent bet-hedging strategy, whereby produce differing phenotype, increase chance that some will be better at coping with anticipated conditions.
