ABSTRACT The term ‘social stress’ has traditionally referred to physiological stress responses induced by the behaviour of conspecifics, particularly aggression or agonistic behaviours. Here, we review consequences social status in fishes using reactive scope model (RSM) explain divergent phenotypes dominant and subordinate fish. RSM plots levels different mediators (e.g. behaviour, glucocorticoid hormones) over time, them define functional ranges that differ their for animal. We discuss differences growth, reproduction tolerance environmental challenges, all which are suppressed individuals, focus on underlying mechanisms give rise these phenotypes. Repeated and/or continual activation hypothalamic–pituitary–interrenal (HPI) axis fish can lead prolonged elevation cortisol, a key mediator. In turn, this increases ‘wear tear’ lowering (i.e. range healthy animal) increasing susceptibility homeostatic overload. That is, they experience and, ultimately, capacity cope with challenges is limited. By contrast, maintained hence better able tolerate challenges. Redefining terms allows us overcome ambiguities limitations associated concept stress.

Global warming facilitates species range-expansions, leading to novel biological interactions between local and range-expanding species. Little is still known of how such modify the performance interacting or these might be altered under climate change. Here, we used an aquarium experiment investigate ecological a poleward range-extending coral reef damselfish ("tropical-vagrant") temperate ("temperate-local") collected from hotspot in SE Australia. We measured effect (isolated vs. paired fish species) on energy expenditure (activity levels, oxidative stress, antioxidant responses), gain (feeding rates), growth rates both present-day (23 °C) future ocean temperatures (26 °C). Short-term were faster (paired species), regardless elevated temperature. Compared isolated species, activity level, feeding rate stress level also higher but not tropical fish. The showed increased long-term temperature, irrespective interactions. conclude that change can important driver physiological traits sympatric fishes mediate critical warming.

Stress is an important aspect of our everyday life and exposure to it unavoidable occurrence. In humans, this can come in the form social stress or physical from injury. Studies animal models have helped researchers understand body’s adaptive response human. Notably, use behavioural tests plays a pivotal role understanding neural, endocrine changes induced by stress. Under socially stressed conditions, parameters are often measured physiological molecular as behaviour direct responses easily assessed tests. Throughout past few decades, rodent model has been used well-established for changes. Recently, more attention drawn towards using fish model. Common such zebrafish, medaka, African cichlids advantage higher rate reproduction, easier handling techniques, sociability most importantly, share evolutionary conserved genetic make-up, neural circuitry, neuropeptide structure function with mammalian species. fact, some species exhibit clear diurnal seasonal rhythmicity their response, similar opposed rodents. Various established including but not limited chronic defeat stress, avoidance, stress-related decision-making. The huge variety patterns teleost also aids study phenotypes than review, we focus on alternative effects different types behaviours. Finally, against typical model-based test compared discussed viability.
