The family Onocleaceae represents a small of terrestrial ferns, with four genera and around five species. It has circumboreal to north temperate distribution, exhibits disjunct distribution between Eurasia North America, including Mexico. Historically, the taxonomy classification this been subject debate contention among scholars, leading contradictory classifications disagreements on number species within family. Furthermore, due intercontinental lack detailed study across its wide range, merits further clarify distributional pattern. Maximum likelihood Bayesian phylogenetic reconstructions were based concatenated sequence dataset for 17 plastid loci one nuclear locus, which generated from 106 ingroup six outgroup taxa three families. Phylogenetic analyses support that is composed main clades, Pentarhizidium was recovered as first branching lineages in Onocleaceae. Molecular dating ancestral area reconstruction suggest stem group originated Late Cretaceous, subsequent diversification establishment Matteuccia, Onoclea, Onocleopsis, during Paleogene Neogene. ancestors Onocleopsis could have migrated America via Beringian land bridge or Atlantic suggests Matteuccia + Onoclea closely aligns Paleocene-Eocene Thermal (PETM). In addition, these results diversity peaks late Neogene Quaternary. Studies such enhance our understanding mechanisms climatic conditions shaping ferns lycophytes eastern Asia, Mexico contribute growing body evidence other taxa, advance origins migration plants continents.
