Abstract Practical engineering structures are subjected to hazardous seismic‐ and wind‐ induced vibrations during their lifetime. They should be designed based on capacity serviceability targets. Similarly, the design of dynamic vibration absorbers (DVAs) also meet multiple requirements. However, most current analytical approaches a single‐target response may lead cumbersome expressions for complicated scenarios. To address these issues, concise solutions negative‐stiffness inerter‐based DVAs proposed in this paper. Firstly, generic optimization approach H ‐norm considering different targets displacement, velocity, acceleration, transmissibility, is established. Subsequently, derived Taylor's expansion by ignoring higher‐order items equivalent mass ratio. Finally, application scope effectiveness discussed. Consequently, resulting proved located close pareto fronts multi‐target results. have shown superior performances than conventional controlling structural indicators practical five‐story steel frame case under wind seismic hazards. Conclusively, simple expression reveal excellent performances, which can provide guidance insights optimal DVAs.
