Abstract Rivets are critical mechanical fasteners in steel bridges, and rivet defects may cause catastrophic failure. This study proposes a convolutional neural network (CNN)‐based inspection system for fast identification diagnosis. Rivet states classified as normal, rusted, loose, missing. A CNN‐based training workflow was introduced to develop reliable diagnosis system. multiscale moving window searching technique proposed solve the challenge of small identification. continuous dataset enrichment strategy applied, which improves efficiency minimizes time. The model performance assessed based on historical bridge Gjerstad. significantly enhances rate 96.3%. classification accuracy robustness were evaluated, conditions leading unidentified rivets discussed summarized.
