The modern era of water quality modeling in the United States began 1960s.Pushed by advances computer technology as well environmental sciences, evolved through five broad periods: (1) initial model development with mainframe computers (1960s -mid 1970s), (2) refinement and generalization minicomputers (mid 1970s 1980s), (3) standardization support microcomputers 1980s 1990s), (4) better access performance faster desktop running Windows local area networks linked to Internet 1990s -early 2000s), (5) integration widespread use (early 2000s -present).Improved continues drive improvements models, including more detailed analysis (spatially temporally), user interfaces geographic information system software, accessibility data from on-line repositories, robust frameworks linking hydrodynamics, quality, watershed atmospheric models.Driven regulatory needs advancing technology, will continue improve address complicated bodies pollutant types, management questions.This manuscript describes historical trends States, reviews current efforts, projects promising future directions.
